We know feet are capable of extraordinary things — and few people embody that more than Megan Fairchild. For decades, Megan has performed at the highest level with grace, strength and consistency, becoming one of New York City Ballet’s most admired principal dancers.
As she prepares for her final performance, we asked Megan to reflect on her journey, her relationship with movement and recovery, and what life after ballet looks like.

When you think back on your career, what moments feel most meaningful or defining to you?
Working on the more difficult ballets and accomplishing them onstage. It’s never a given that a live show will go well, and you don’t want your best dancing to be the moments no one sees in the studio. When the magic of the orchestra and audience help you reach amazing moments in live performance, those are some major highs in this career.
Your feet have quite literally carried you through an extraordinary career. What are your non-negotiables when it comes to caring for your feet?
If I have a special event where I need to wear heels, I wear sneakers or my Oofos flip flops on the way over and then change discreetly at the coat check. Otherwise I’m asking for some type of bone to be out of place when I dance the next day. I also don’t really get pedicures, but when I do I don’t let them scrape off my calluses. I need them! Truly love Pedestrian’s new file to keep the calluses contained!
Are there passions, projects or routines you’re looking forward to spending more time on after retiring from the stage?
I am looking to slow down for a minute! My family is moving to France and I am focusing on doing all the school pickup and drop offs (I’ve missed a lot for my shows!) and to find a new exercise routine and maybe some in person French classes. I’ll have to build a whole new community there of people to be connected with and I’m looking forward to lots of kid time!!!!
You were an early supporter of Pedestrian. What initially resonated with you about the brand and what are your favorite Pedestrian products?
My favorite products are the Walker’s Cream and the file! I even use the foot lotion on my hands before bed too. I love the smell of the products. I love the idea of giving love to your feet that carry us through so many jam-packed and busy days. It’s a nice moment to thank your body and thank yourself for all it does for you!
