City: Boston, MA
Neighborhood:North End
Nearest Public Transit: Haymarket or North Station (Orange and Green lines)
Known for its narrow cobblestone streets, charming old-world architecture, and delicious Italian eateries, Boston's North End is one of the city's most vibrant and beloved neighborhoods and it is best explored on foot.
Start your journey at the corner of Hanover Street, the North End’s main artery. This bustling thoroughfare is lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops including Caffe Vittoria, the first Italian cafe in Boston. Start your day with an espresso and a cannoli, Boston's beloved dessert.
A few steps from Hanover Street, you'll find the iconic Old North Church (located at 193 Salem Street). Famous for its role in the American Revolution, it was from this very steeple that the signal "One if by land, and two if by sea" was sent out, alerting Paul Revere of the British troops' approach. This is the oldest surviving church building in Boston, and it still holds services today.
Just a short walk from Hanover Street, you'll find Christopher Columbus Park (Atlantic Ave & Commercial St), a serene escape in the heart of the North End. This waterfront park is known for its beautiful gardens, stunning harbor views, and the iconic "Rose Kennedy Greenway" which connects several of Boston's historic parks.
Once you're ready for lunch or dinner, head to one of the North End’s many renowned Italian restaurants. Depending on your preference, choose from these top spots:
-
Neptune Oyster (63 Salem St)
If you're in the mood for seafood, Neptune Oyster is a must-visit. Known for its fresh oysters, lobster rolls, and clam chowder, it’s a small but bustling spot that packs a punch when it comes to flavor. Try the lobster roll served hot with butter! -
Giacomo’s Ristorante (355 Hanover St)
For classic Italian fare, Giacomo’s is beloved for its delicious pasta dishes, from lobster ravioli to shrimp scampi. The ambiance is casual but cozy, making it a perfect spot to indulge in rich, homemade pasta. -
La Familia Giorgio (117 Salem St)
A family-run gem, La Familia Giorgio offers hearty Italian comfort food. The portions are generous, the sauce is homemade, and the atmosphere is welcoming. It’s a great choice for an authentic, no-fuss meal.
No visit to the North End is complete without dessert. While Mike's Pastry is legendary, we recommend checking out Modern Pastry (257 Hanover St) nearby, a touch less crowded but equally delicious alternative, known for its creamy ricotta cannoli and delicious biscotti.
