City: Los Angeles, CA
Neighborhood: Van Nuys
Starting Location: Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve (6350 Woodley Ave, Van Nuys, CA 91406)
If you're looking for a nature-filled escape away from LA without venturing too far from the city, the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve and nearby Lake Balboa are the perfect spots.
Start your journey at the entrance to the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve, a sprawling 225-acre natural habitat. This urban oasis features a network of trails that loop through wetlands, woodlands, and open fields, making it ideal for both casual walks and more serious birdwatching.
The Reserve has a number of easy-to-navigate trails, all of which are fairly flat, making it perfect for a leisurely walk. The main trail runs along the perimeter of the Reserve and takes you through the diverse landscapes that make up the Basin.
Sepulveda Basin is a popular spot for migratory birds, so it’s not uncommon to see species like the California Towhee, Red-tailed Hawks, and even the occasional Peregrine Falcon.
Once you’ve soaked in the wildlife reserve, head over to Lake Balboa, which is just a short walk away. From the Reserve, you can follow Woodley Avenue south towards the lake. The walk itself is less than a mile, but you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a completely different world once you reach the water’s edge.
Things to See at Lake Balboa:
- The Lake: The central attraction here is, of course, the lake itself with Swan Pedal Boats gliding across the water (available to rent by the hour). The lake’s calm waters create a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for slowing down and enjoying the outdoors.
- Japanese Garden: Just off the south side of the lake, you’ll find a beautiful Japanese Garden. The lush greenery, koi ponds, and tranquil design make it a lovely place to take a moment of reflection.
- Picnic Areas: There are several well-maintained picnic areas around the lake, perfect for an afternoon stop. Whether you want to enjoy lunch or just rest in the shade, it's a great spot to take a break.
Both spots are well-loved by locals but aren’t nearly as crowded as some of LA’s more famous parks, so you’ll often find that you have the trails and the lakefront to yourself (especially on weekdays).
Bonus Tips:
- Dog-Friendly: Both the Wildlife Reserve and Lake Balboa are dog-friendly, so feel free to bring your furry friends along. Just be sure to keep them on a leash.
- Parking: There’s plenty of free parking available at both the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve and Lake Balboa, with lots near the main entrances.
- Weather: Summer can get warm, so early mornings or evenings are the best times for a stroll. Bring sunscreen and a hat if you’re walking during the day.
- Accessibility: Both the Reserve and the lake are fairly accessible for those with limited mobility, with paved paths and mostly flat terrain.
